Aeros Stat of the Day:
- The
Aeros winning percentage in shutout games is .733, currently the best in the
Eastern League. Akron has played in 15 shutout games and has won 11, second
most in the league.
Aerodynamics…
- Goose egg… The Aeros defeated Erie by a
12-0 count Thursday for their 11th shutout of the season. Akron
jumped out to 6-0 lead thanks to home runs by third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall,
right fielder John Drennen, and left fielder Tim Fedroff, and alert base
running by second baseman Jason Kipnis who came in from second after a throwing
error. Akron poured on the runs in the seventh in a rally started by designated
hitter Jerad Head when he hit an RBI single up the middle to score center
fielder Jordan Henry from second. Mills then walked to load the bases to set up
Perez. The Caracas, Venezuela native singled to score Kipnis, but an error on
Erie’s left fielder Brandon Jones allowed Head to come home. Drennen made it
11-0 with a deep double to left-center field that brought home Mills and Perez.
Erie hurt itself again when Pounds threw the ball wide of first base and
Drennen advanced home from second to make it 12-0. SeaWolves starter Anthony
Shawler took the loss and is now 4-3.
- White’s out… Right-handed starter Alex
White had a fantastic outing as he improved to 8-7 with three hits, five
strikeouts and one walk. He threw seven shutout innings, matching his longest
outing of the season. The former Tar Heel has a team leading 12 quality starts
of fewer than three earned runs in at least six innings pitched. Relievers Nick
Hagadone and Rob Bryson came in and pitched an inning each with Bryson giving
up the only other hit of the game.
- Lunar Lonnie… With Chisenhall’s home run
in the first inning Thursday, The Newport, N.C. native now has 17 round trips
and has tied current Columbus Clipper Matt McBride for the most by any Aeros
player this season. It is Chisenhall’s second home run of the week after
hitting one on Tuesday in Bowie.
- Taking advantage… The Aeros have scored
four runs in the past three games on plays where opponents have made an error.
Akron’s opponents in the past three games have committed a total of nine
errors, the most over any three-game stretch this season.
- No love…The Aeros didn’t receive any help
tonight in the Western Division wild card race as Bowie came back to defeat New
Britain and Harrisburg defeated Trenton. Akron remains 3.5 games back of the
second-place Senators, but now has an elimination number in single digits at
nine with 11 games to play.
- Number one fireworks… The final fireworks
show of the season will follow Friday’s game against Erie and will be sponsored
by KeyBank. On Saturday, the first 1,000 fans will receive a foam finger
giveaway sponsored by the Akron Canton Airport. The airport will also be giving
away a free AirTran airline voucher to two lucky fans in attendance. Sunday
will be the final Family Pack Sunday and will be sponsored by the Duquesne
Incline where fans can buy four tickets, four hot dogs, four fountain drinks,
and four bags of chips for only $48!

Aerodynamics…
- Home away from home… The Aeros will play a rare
doubleheader in which they will be the home team for the continuation opener and
be the away team for the nightcap. Akron and Bowie originally started a game at
Canal Park before weather postponed the game. Because it was the last time the
Baysox were scheduled to visit Akron this season, the game has to be made up in
Bowie. Action will resume Bowie batting in the top of the second with Brandon
Waring on first with the game scoreless.
- The Senate rules… Harrisburg completed a three-game
series sweep of Akron yesterday with a pair of wins by counts of 6-1 (eight
innings) and 2-1. Harrisburg scored first in game one in the third inning on an
RBI double by Chris Marrero. Akron tied it up in the bottom of the sixth when
third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall doubled in center fielder Jordan Henry from
first. The game went extra innings, but the Sens scored five in the eighth to
score the win. Left-handed reliever Nick Hagadone took the loss and four-time
World Series champion Orlando Hernandez earned the win. In game two, Harrisburg
jumped out 1-0 in the second frame when Devin Ivany hit in Chris Marrero on a
groundout. Ivany also hit an RBI single in the fourth. Akron finally scored in
the sixth when shortstop Carlos Rivero hit an RBI single and drove in right
fielder Jerad Head, who reached on a walk and moved over on a ground out by
first baseman Beau Mills. It was not enough, however, as the hosts left three
on base in the inning and fell 2-1.
Recap 08/13: Aeros Blast Rock Cats Friday, Win 11-7
AKRON,
OH – A franchise-record tying three triples and a seven-run fifth inning
highlighted an 11-7 victory for the Aeros Friday night over the visiting New
Britain Rock Cats. Akron pounded 17 hits on the night including six of the
extra-base variety while tying season-highs with the six runs and seven base
hits in the fifth. The win improved the Aeros to 60-57 this season and just 2.5
games behind second-place Bowie in the Western Division wild card race while
the last-place Rock Cats fell to 34-85.
New
Britain began the scoring early against Akron starter Kelvin De La Cruz in the
first two frames. Juan Portes plated two runs with a double to left and an RBI
single from Joe Benson gave the visitors a quick 3-0 advantage.
Two
errors helped the Aeros later in that second as a misplayed infield single
turned into a run and center fielder Jordan Henry continued the rally with a
run-scoring hit to center.
De
La Cruz struggled again in the third inning as the Rock Cats extended their
lead to 6-2. Two more walks preceded a clutch two-out, three-run home run into
the left field canal from Jeff Howell that put the hosts in a large early
deficit.
Akron’s
comeback began in the third on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Carlos Rivero
before the record-tying fifth inning. Second baseman Jason Kipnis homered to
begin the frame against starter Deolis Guerra while Rivero knocked Guerra out
of the game with an RBI double to left-center.
After the second out of the inning, catcher Juan Apodaca followed with a
pivotal 12-pitch walk that created even more opportunities for the Aeros.
Designated
hitter Cristo Arnal then cleared the bases with a three-run triple to left and
Henry tripled him home on a liner to dead center. Kipnis then recorded his
second RBI of the frame on a single to left to extend the lead to 10-6 and
cement the lead for good.
Mark
Dolenc hit a solo home run to begin the sixth and another Akron RBI triple in
the seventh, this time from left fielder Tim Fedroff, provided for the final
margin of the night.
Nick
Hagadone (2-1) earned the victory with two innings of relief, allowing one run
but pitching in the midst of the offensive attack. Guerra (2-9) permitted seven
runs (five earned) on 10 hits in just 4.1 innings pitched and he now has a 0-6
record in his last seven starts. De La Cruz surrendered six runs with six walks
in four frames in the start but relievers Chen-Chang Lee and Omar Aguilar
retired the final nine New Britain batters.
Seven
of the nine Aeros hitters finished with at least two hits led by Henry’s three
hits and his third triple of the season. Arnal tied a career-high with three RBI
via his fifth inning triple as well and this was the sixth instance of three
three-baggers in franchise history.
Akron’s
home stand continues tomorrow against New Britain at 7:05 p.m. for an exciting Saturday
night at Canal Park. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a replica
of the 2009 Akron Aeros Eastern League Championship ring, sponsored by Distillata
Water. The hit show “Beer Money” from Sports Time Ohio will also film around
the stadium.
The Aeros aim for a third straight victory Saturday

Recap 08/10: Aeros Struggle Again, Lose 11-0 to Reading
AKRON, OH – The Aeros lost for the eighth time in 10 games Tuesday night at Canal Park, suffering their largest margin of defeat this season by the final score of 11-0 against the Reading Phillies. Right-hander Corey Kluber surrendered six runs on 11 hits in just four innings in his first home start while the Phillies collected 18 hits on the night against the five Akron pitchers. Despite the loss, Akron (58-56) remains 4.5 games behind the Western Division wild card race and the R-Phils improved to 56-58.
Center fielder Jordan Henry and second baseman Jason Kipnis each singled to start the first, but the Aeros then struggled offensively against Reading lefty starter Yohan Flande. Kluber avoided damage in the first two frames before a rally in the third that featured four runs on five hits highlighted by a two-run double from Timo Perez.
The blowout continued in the fourth as Harold Garcia extended the lead to 6-0 with a one-out, two-run single to center. Left-handed reliever Nick Hagadone replaced Kluber in the fifth but allowed another run on Keoni De Renne’s RBI double.
The Phillies provided for the final margin of the night with another four-run rally against relief pitcher Steven Wright in the top of the seventh. Flande retired 15 of his final 16 batters and the Aeros finally rallied but stranded a pair of runners to end the ninth.
Flande (8-7) earned the victory in his seven scoreless frames, allowing just three hits and two walks in one of his finest starts of the year. Kluber (0-2) faltered again in his second Eastern League outing, striking out five with one walk in the game. Akron’s bullpen fared no better, allowing the next five runs on seven hits with four hits in the final five frames.
New catcher Juan Apodaca was the only Aeros batter to reach base twice as he finished with a single and a walk. Left fielder Lucas Montero also doubled but the team has now failed to score four runs in eight of the nine games played in August.

Recap 08/05: Curve Complete Sweep, Defeat Aeros 6-1
ALTOONA,
PA – Akron matched a season-high with a sixth straight loss Thursday as the
Altoona Curve finished a four-game sweep with a 6-1 victory at Blair County
Ballpark. Despite just one earned run charged against Aeros pitchers Kelvin De
La Cruz and Nick Hagadone in front of the crowd of 4,316 fans, the offense again
could not muster enough support. Altoona improved to 65-46 with the win while fourth-place
Akron fell to 56-54 on the season, 4.5 games behind the wild card-leading Bowie
Baysox.
Lefty
starters De La Cruz and Altoona’s Tony Watson combined to retire the first 21
batters of the contest before a big bottom of the fourth inning. Josh Harrison
reached base on a one-out hit by pitch, stole second and third base before scoring
on an RBI single from Matt Hague. After a throwing error from De La Cruz, two
singles, a balk and a walk followed to give the Curve a quick 4-0 advantage.
Right
fielder John Drennen recorded the first Aeros hit in the fifth but Watson
cruised through his six frames. Reliever Ramon Aguero entered in the seventh
and after stranding a runners, Akron rallied in the eighth. Second baseman
Jason Kipnis walked with one out with a runner on first and Lonnie Chisenhall singled
to center, scoring Cristo Arnal.
Andrew
Lambo singled to start the bottom of that eighth while a throwing error by
Chisenhall extended the lead to 5-1. Two batters later, Hagadone permitted an
RBI infield single to Yung Chi Chen to provide for the final run of the game.
Watson
(4-1) allowed just two hits in his six scoreless frames while earning the
victory, striking out three batters in his third start of the year. De La Cruz
(4-6) took the loss in allowing four runs (one earned) in his five innings,
walking one with five strikeouts but his error was the crucial difference. Hagadone then permitted two more unearned runs
with two strikeouts in his three innings pitched because of Chisenhall’s error in
the eighth.
Drennen
and left fielder Tim Fedroff each collected a pair of hits on the night while
Akron finished with only seven runs and 24 hits in the series. The Aeros had
gone 36-18 in a stretch from May 31st through July 30th,
but have struggled thus far in the month of August.
Akron’s
weeklong road trip continues Friday night at 7:05 p.m. as the team heads over
to Connecticut for the start of a three-game series against the New Britain

Recap 08/01: R-Phils Smash Reyes, Aeros Lose Finale 11-3
AKRON,
OH – Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Anthony Reyes struggled in his rehab
start Sunday, allowing nine runs in 1.2 innings pitched as the Akron Aeros
ended a weeklong home stand with an 11-3 loss to the Reading Phillies. The
Phillies pounced for eight runs in the top of the second, the most allowed by
the Aeros all season in splitting the four-game series in front of 2,616 fans
at Canal Park. The loss dropped Akron to 56-50 while Reading jumped back to
.500 for the season at 53-53.
Reyes
struggled in the top of the first inning as well, allowing a leadoff walk and a
stolen base to Michael Spidale. Harold Garcia advanced Spidale to third with an
RBI single while Matt Rizzotti followed with a double to right-center to provide
for an early 2-0 lead.
The
top of the second then witnessed 13 different Reading at-bats and the frame
began with three hits and a sacrifice bunt. Each of the next four batters
reached base again, including three walks, as Reyes exited the game after
forcing a soft liner to third base for the second out. Reliever Chen-Chang Lee
entered the game but walked in another run to extend the deficit to 7-0 while a
single and an error scored another three runs.
Nick
Hagadone replaced Lee out of the bullpen in the fourth and after forcing two
quick outs, ran into trouble again. Tuffy Gosewisch doubled to left-center
field and Freddy Galvis followed with an RBI single to provide for Reading’s
final run.
The
Aeros offense finally responded to the blowout in the bottom of the fourth
inning as third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall cleared the right field bleachers
with a leadoff home run. Starting pitcher Michael Cisco then caught fire,
retiring the next 12 batters he faced.
Akron
scored the final runs in the ninth against Phillies reliever Chance Chapman.
Center fielder Jordan Henry and Chisenhall each doubled to cut the margin down
to 11-2 and after a walk to Beau Mills, John Drennen recorded an RBI on a fielder’s
choice.
Cisco
(3-7) earned the victory with one of his finest starts of the season, allowing
just a single run on three hits in seven innings pitched. Reyes (0-1) failed to
survive the second frame in his second Akron outing following June 2009 Tommy
John reconstructive right elbow surgery, permitting six hits and four walks to
the 15 hitters he faced. The nine runs permitted tied for the most allowed by
an Aeros pitcher in 2010 and fortunately, the bullpen provided 7.1 efficient
innings with 10 strikeouts against only one earned run.
Henry
and Chisenhall provided for four of the only six Akron hits overall on the
afternoon, as each extended their hitting streaks with multi-hit performances.
Henry finished the home stand with a .571 (12-for-21) batting average and
Chisenhall’s homer was his 12th.
The
Aeros will enjoy an off day Monday before resuming action Tuesday against the
first-place Altoona Curve. A doubleheader begins the crucial four-game series,
and the two teams will play a pair of seven innings games starting Tuesday at
5:30 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark. Alex White (6-4, 1.49 ERA) and Paolo Espino
(9-4, 4.00 ERA) will throw for Akron against Altoona starters Justin Wilson
(8-6, 3.06 ERA) and Jared Hughes (11-7, 4.62 ERA). Tuesday’s radio broadcast begins at 5:15 p.m.

Recap 07/29: Aeros Rally, Walk Off in 6-5 Win over Reading
AKRON,
OH – The Aeros tied the score in the eighth inning before winning in the ninth,
defeating the visiting Reading Phillies 6-5 in front of a rowdy Canal Park
crowd Thursday night. Catcher Miguel Perez scored first baseman Beau Mills with
the walk-off sacrifice fly to left field, providing the dramatic victory for
Akron’s 3,838 Thirsty Thursday fans. The win improved the third-place Aeros to
55-48 this season, only 4.5 games behind the division-leading Altoona Curve,
while the Phillies fell to 51-52 with the loss.
Cleveland
Indians closer Kerry Wood started the game on his rehab assignment, quickly
retiring all three batters he faced in the top of the first inning. Third
baseman Lonnie Chisenhall then provided a one-out RBI triple in the bottom half
of the inning to plate center fielder Jordan Henry and give Akron an early 1-0
advantage.
The
Phillies responded with four unearned runs against usual Aeros starting pitcher
Alex White in the second. A throwing error by shortstop Carlos Rivero scored
the first run, an RBI bunt single and a two-run triple presented a three-run
deficit for the host team.
Reading’s
lead was short-lived as second baseman Jason Kipnis lined a two-run triple to
right in the fourth inning and Chisenhall followed with a groundout to tie the
score at 4-4.
Flande
and White battled in the ensuing frames while the latter permitted the visiting
team to retake the lead in the seventh. Harold Garcia collected an RBI single
to right but reliever Nick Hagadone escaped a bases loaded jam to prevent any
further damage.
The
comeback then began the in the eighth inning as Perez again started with a
single. Newcomer Lucas Montero drew a walk, Henry laid down a sacrifice bunt
and Kipnis walked before Chisenhall tied the game with a clutch sacrifice fly
to center.
Mills
initiated the final rally in the ninth against reliever James Anderson with a
leadoff double and advanced to third on a Rivero groundout. Anderson
intentionally walked John Drennen to face Perez, who ended the game with his
sac fly before the Akron bench mobbed him near home plate to celebrate the
series-opening victory.
Closer
Omar Aguilar (2-3) earned the victory for the Aeros with a perfect ninth
inning, striking out one batter. Anderson (0-3) took the loss in allowing the
deciding tally while fellow Reading reliever Matt German blew the save in the
eighth. Wood threw only eight pitches in his rehab outing and White followed
with 5.1 innings pitched, permitting five runs (one earned) on seven hits with
a career-high eight strikeouts.
Chisenhall
led the Akron offense as he finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and one of three
combined triples tonight. Mills and Perez each had two hits and Montero was
0-for-2 but drew a pair of walks after earning the promotion from Class A
Kinston earlier in the day.
This
four-game series continues tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. with a Friday Fireworks
spectacular and Kids Cancer Survivors Celebration Night at Canal Park. Lefty

? Monday Madness… The Bowie Baysox slammed the Aeros pitching staff Monday night, earning a 10-5 victory in the opener of Akron’s seven-game home stand. Bowie scored the game’s first three runs in the third and fourth against Aeros starter Paolo Espino before back-and-forth offense highlighted the middle innings. Designated Matt McBride and first baseman Beau Mills each doubled and right fielder Jerad Head had an RBI single in the fourth inning but the Baysox responded to take a 6-2 lead. Akron third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall lined a home run in the fifth while the road team again scored three more runs in the sixth inning. Second baseman Jason Kipnis plated the fifth Aeros with a double while new reliever Nick Hagadone permitted the final run of the night in the eighth. Bowie reliever Ryohei Tanaka (5-11) struggled but earned the win while Espino (9-4) took the loss.
Recap 07/26: Baysox Take Opener, Defeat Aeros 10-5
AKRON,
OH – The Bowie Baysox out-slugged the Aeros Monday night, earning a 10-5
victory in the first game of a three-game series at Canal Park. Amidst 29 total
hits, nine doubles, four errors and nine pitchers used in the three-hour and
21-minute marathon, the Baysox jumped an extra game in the tight Western
Division wild card race. With the win in front of the downtown Akron crowd of
7,661 fans on Dollar Dog Monday, second-place Bowie improved to 56-47 this
season with a two-game lead over the 53-48 Aeros.
Eastern
League All-Star Paolo Espino struggled in the start for Akron and allowed Bowie
to take an early lead in the third. A Tyler Henson RBI single scored Greg
Miclat and the Baysox added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a double
from Carlos Rojas.
Trailing
3-0, the Aeros responded in the bottom of the fourth as designated hitter Matt
McBride and first baseman Beau Mills began the frame with back-to-back doubles.
Right fielder Jerad Head then scored Mills with a single but Bowie continued to
hammer Espino later that inning. Jonathan Tucker knocked him out of the game
with a one-out RBI double while reliever Steven Wright permitted two more hits
to increase the deficit to 6-2.
Akron
third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall returned the favor against Baysox starting
pitcher Chorye Spoone in the fifth. Center fielder Jordan Henry drew a leadoff
walk and after an out, Chisenhall lined a homer to right, cutting the deficit
in half to only two runs.
Unfortunately,
the Bowie offense stayed hot with three runs all against Wright in the sixth
highlighted by a two-run single from Tucker. Aeros second baseman Jason Kipnis
made it a 9-5 game with a double to score catcher Damaso Espino in the bottom
of that frame against reliever Ryohei Tanaka. Steven Lerud then added the
evening’s final run with a double to dead center field against new reliever
Nick Hagadone in the eighth.
Tanaka
(5-11) earned the win in just his second relief appearance of the season,
allowing a run on three hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Espino (9-4) took the
loss, snapping a streak of two straight quality starts in permitting the first

as well in surrendering the next four runs while Hagadone delivered two innings
pitched on the night with one more run allowed.

18 batters recorded at least one hit, including 10 with at least two, as only
Akron catcher Damaso Espino did not to reach base twice. John Drennen, Mills, and
Head all collected two hits for Akron, as the latter extended his hitting
streak to 10 straight games.

? End of an Era… Akron’s seven-game winning streak ended in Reading, PA Thursday night as the Phillies defeated the Aeros by the final score of 4-1 in front of 8,319 fans at First Energy Stadium. Drew Naylor pitched eight efficient innings for the R-Phils in the victory while his offense pounced on Akron lefty starter Nick Hagadone in the first. Reading’s Harold Garcia homered for the first time this season that inning and Kevin Mahar added another solo shot in the fourth. The Aeros scored their lone run of the game when shortstop Carlos Rivero doubled and second baseman Cristo Arnal picked up the RBI on a single to left in the fifth. The Phillies added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings as Naylor (9-7) earned the victory, Hagadone (1-1) took his first Double-A loss in his return from the disabled list and Justin De Fratus recorded his first save with Reading.
