Aeros Stat of the Day:
- The Aeros have won all 10 games
against Erie at Canal Park this year and 19 straight at home dating back to May
25, 2009. Over that stretch, Akron has outscored the SeaWolves 135-38.
Aerodynamics…
- Goose
eggs recalled… The
Aeros shutout Erie for the second time in this four-game series with a 9-0
decision. The Aeros struck first when designated hitter Jerad Head hit in
center fielder Jordan Henry on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice in which the
SeaWolves attempted to turn a double play in the first inning. Right fielder
John Drennen eventually took advantage with an RBI-single to right field that
scored second baseman Jason Kipnis. Head faced another bases-loaded opportunity
in the second and he promptly delivered with a two-RBI double down the left
field line that scored shortstop Cristo Arnal and Henry. First baseman Beau
Mills followed with a two-RBI single that scored third baseman Lonnie
Chisenhall and Head for a 6-0 lead. Head added his fourth RBI of the night in
the fourth with a sacrifice fly that brought in Kipnis. The Aeros scored
insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to cement the win.
- EL
Shutouts… Akron
has shut out Erie three times this season, and is tied with Trenton with the
most shutouts in the league with 12. The Aeros are 12-4 in shutout games this
year while the Thunder holds a 12-5 record in shutout games.
- Happy
Birthday… Left-handed
starter Matt Packer celebrated his 23rd birthday in style as he shut
out the SeaWolves and struck out eight batters, the most he has had with the
Aeros, through six innings of work. The Germantown, Tenn. earned his first
Double-A win and improved to 1-2. Erie starter Jon Kibler (5-5) took the loss
after he gave up seven runs on seven hits with six walks and two strikeouts in
four innings.
- Head scalps Erie… Outfielder Jerad Head continues to be successful against the
SeaWolves as he recorded his 10th multi-RBI game of the season with
the Aeros Saturday as he hit in four runners. It’s the second time the Topeka,
Kan. native has batted in four runs this year. Head has the highest batting
average (.425) and the most RBI (13) of any current Aeros player against Erie.
- Duplicating Drennen… Outfielder John Drennen has went 2-4 with a double in each of the
past four games. The San Diego native has hit in six RBI and scored three runs
during that stretch.
- Post-season
setting up… Akron
improved their playoff chances as they gained a game on current Western
Division wild card leader Harrisburg with the Senators 2-1 loss to Trenton, as
well as third-place Bowie as they fell 6-5 to New Britain. The Aeros are now
2.5 games back of the wild card lead with nine games remaining. Altoona
defeated Richmond Saturday night meaning they stay 10 games in front of Akron,
thus eliminating them from winning the regular season division title. Trenton
and New Hampshire both have clinched playoff spots in the east. If the Aeros
win the wild card, they will play the Western Division champions on September 8
and 9 before returning to Canal Park on Friday, Sept. 10. If necessary, Game 4
will be in Akron on Saturday, Sept. 11 and Game 5 will be on the road on
Sunday, Sept. 12.

Aeros Stat of the Day:
- The
Aeros winning percentage in shutout games is .733, currently the best in the
Eastern League. Akron has played in 15 shutout games and has won 11, second
most in the league.
Aerodynamics…
- Goose egg… The Aeros defeated Erie by a
12-0 count Thursday for their 11th shutout of the season. Akron
jumped out to 6-0 lead thanks to home runs by third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall,
right fielder John Drennen, and left fielder Tim Fedroff, and alert base
running by second baseman Jason Kipnis who came in from second after a throwing
error. Akron poured on the runs in the seventh in a rally started by designated
hitter Jerad Head when he hit an RBI single up the middle to score center
fielder Jordan Henry from second. Mills then walked to load the bases to set up
Perez. The Caracas, Venezuela native singled to score Kipnis, but an error on
Erie’s left fielder Brandon Jones allowed Head to come home. Drennen made it
11-0 with a deep double to left-center field that brought home Mills and Perez.
Erie hurt itself again when Pounds threw the ball wide of first base and
Drennen advanced home from second to make it 12-0. SeaWolves starter Anthony
Shawler took the loss and is now 4-3.
- White’s out… Right-handed starter Alex
White had a fantastic outing as he improved to 8-7 with three hits, five
strikeouts and one walk. He threw seven shutout innings, matching his longest
outing of the season. The former Tar Heel has a team leading 12 quality starts
of fewer than three earned runs in at least six innings pitched. Relievers Nick
Hagadone and Rob Bryson came in and pitched an inning each with Bryson giving
up the only other hit of the game.
- Lunar Lonnie… With Chisenhall’s home run
in the first inning Thursday, The Newport, N.C. native now has 17 round trips
and has tied current Columbus Clipper Matt McBride for the most by any Aeros
player this season. It is Chisenhall’s second home run of the week after
hitting one on Tuesday in Bowie.
- Taking advantage… The Aeros have scored
four runs in the past three games on plays where opponents have made an error.
Akron’s opponents in the past three games have committed a total of nine
errors, the most over any three-game stretch this season.
- No love…The Aeros didn’t receive any help
tonight in the Western Division wild card race as Bowie came back to defeat New
Britain and Harrisburg defeated Trenton. Akron remains 3.5 games back of the
second-place Senators, but now has an elimination number in single digits at
nine with 11 games to play.
- Number one fireworks… The final fireworks
show of the season will follow Friday’s game against Erie and will be sponsored
by KeyBank. On Saturday, the first 1,000 fans will receive a foam finger
giveaway sponsored by the Akron Canton Airport. The airport will also be giving
away a free AirTran airline voucher to two lucky fans in attendance. Sunday
will be the final Family Pack Sunday and will be sponsored by the Duquesne
Incline where fans can buy four tickets, four hot dogs, four fountain drinks,
and four bags of chips for only $48!

Aerodynamics…
- Home away from home… The Aeros will play a rare
doubleheader in which they will be the home team for the continuation opener and
be the away team for the nightcap. Akron and Bowie originally started a game at
Canal Park before weather postponed the game. Because it was the last time the
Baysox were scheduled to visit Akron this season, the game has to be made up in
Bowie. Action will resume Bowie batting in the top of the second with Brandon
Waring on first with the game scoreless.
- The Senate rules… Harrisburg completed a three-game
series sweep of Akron yesterday with a pair of wins by counts of 6-1 (eight
innings) and 2-1. Harrisburg scored first in game one in the third inning on an
RBI double by Chris Marrero. Akron tied it up in the bottom of the sixth when
third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall doubled in center fielder Jordan Henry from
first. The game went extra innings, but the Sens scored five in the eighth to
score the win. Left-handed reliever Nick Hagadone took the loss and four-time
World Series champion Orlando Hernandez earned the win. In game two, Harrisburg
jumped out 1-0 in the second frame when Devin Ivany hit in Chris Marrero on a
groundout. Ivany also hit an RBI single in the fourth. Akron finally scored in
the sixth when shortstop Carlos Rivero hit an RBI single and drove in right
fielder Jerad Head, who reached on a walk and moved over on a ground out by
first baseman Beau Mills. It was not enough, however, as the hosts left three
on base in the inning and fell 2-1.

Aerodynamics
- Early
fireworks… A seven-run eighth inning rally highlighted a 15-10 victory for
the Aeros as they avoided a sweep by Reading Thursday night. The R-Phils led by
as many as five runs before Akron scored 13 runs in the fifth through the
eighth inning to secure the win. Right fielder Jerad Head hit a two-run home
run in the first to start the scoring and added a second two-run round tripper
in the fifth to bring the score to 7-6 in favor of the Phillies. The Aeros
regained the lead in the following inning with two runs, but Reading responded
with two in the sixth and one in the seventh for a 10-8 advantage. Akron’s
rally was then started by center fielder Jordan Henry with a two-RBI single
that scored left fielder Tim Fedroff and designated hitter Lucas Montero. Third
baseman Lonnie Chisenhall then singled in Henry to take the lead 11-10. A
bases-loaded walk scored second baseman Jason Kipnis before shortstop Carlos
Rivero provided the final blow with a bases-clearing double to cap his four-RBI
night.
- Winning
marbles… Right-handed reliever Bryan Price earned the win for the Aeros
Thursday night and improved to 6-3 on the season. The Marble Falls, TX native
allowed one run on three hits and struck out one over two innings of work. It
is Price’s second win in his last three outings, as he also earned a victory
against Reading a week prior.
- Born to
Run… The Aeros 15 runs Thursday night are the most they have scored in a
game this season. The previous record was 12, set four times with the last
coming on August 14th against New Britain. Coincidentally, two of
the other four games came against Reading on May 7th and July 24th.
- Heading
Home… Head continues to be an offensive force since returning to the Aeros
on Tuesday. With his three hits Thursday, the Topeka, Kan. native extended his
hit streak to 17 games, second-longest of the season for Akron. Head has also
hit four home runs in the past three days with one coming in a continuation
game.
- August
heat… With Bowie and Harrisburg both losing Thursday, Akron now stands
equally with the Senators, just one game back of the Baysox for the Western
Division wild card. The Aeros now face their arguably most important week of
the season with a three game series against Harrisburg before traveling to
Bowie for another three game series and to complete a continuation game.
- Fireworks
encore… Fireworks will follow Friday’s game sponsored by Pizza Hut’s at
Canal Park. August 21st marks the last Super Saver Saturday of the
seasons where fans can take advantage of $7 tickets
and $1 specials on hot dogs, draft beer, soft drinks and popcorn. Fans can also
utilize a 10 percent discount at the Infield Outfitters team shop. In addition
to all that value, the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive an Aeros
dry-fit t-shirt courtesy of FirstMerit.

The
Aeros took the Phillies into extra innings Wednesday night, but could not pull
out the win as they dropped a 3-2 decision on the road. Both starting pitchers
allowed two-run home runs, but remained solid otherwise in front of the 6,001
in attendance at FirstEnergy Stadium. Akron fell
to 63-59 while Reading
improved to 59-62.
The
scoring began in the top of the fourth inning when designated hitter Jerad Head
extended his hit streak to 16 games with a two-run home run over the left field
fence, scoring second baseman Jason Kipnis, who reached on a walk.
The
R-Phils tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Michael Spidale singled
to left field and Tagg Bozied hit his third home run of the series to even the
score 2-2. After three shutout innings by both teams, Reading scored the deciding run when John
Suomi scored after a fielding error by first baseman Beau Mills and a throwing
error by Kipnis.
Akron‘s starting pitcher
Scott Barnes earned a no decision despite limiting the Phillies to just two
runs on four hits. He struck out five and walked one over six strong innings.
Closer Omar Aguilar (2-5) was tagged with the loss on an unearned run with one
out in the 10th.
Reading’s
starter J.C. Ramirez also took a no decision in allowing two runs on five hits,
while striking out six and walking two over six innings. Jason Anderson (1-5) earned
the win in giving up just one hit while fanning one and walking one in an
inning of work.
The
Aeros look to avoid the sweep Thursday night when lefty Kelvin De La Cruz (4-6,
4.98 ERA) takes the mound against the Phillies’ Austin Hyatt (0-0, 1.87 ERA). Join Ken Carman for Thursday’s radio broadcast beginning at
6:50 p.m. on Fox Sports 1350 AM and at www.akronaeros.com. For more information,

GAME #105 ? SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2010 ? 7:05 P.M.
HOME GAME #56 ? CANAL PARK ? AKRON, OH
· Shutout City… Akron’s hot streak continued Friday night at Canal Park as three Aeros pitchers combined to shutout the Reading Phillies in a 6-0 victory. Lefty starter Kelvin De La Cruz led the way with six shutout innings and the scoring began in the first on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall. Shortstop Carlos Rivero then lofted a home run in the second inning before extending the lead to 3-0 with a sac fly in the third. An error by Reading third baseman Cody Overbeck scored Chisenhall from second base in the fifth and after a John Drennen double, a wild pitch plated Rivero. First baseman Beau Mills drove in the final run on an RBI infield single to third base in the sixth inning with the bases loaded. De La Cruz (4-5) earned the victory before relievers Chen-Chang Lee and Connor Graham sealed the deal as Phillies starter Ty Taubenheim (3-2) took the loss.
Recap 07/30: Aeros Blank Phillies, Secure 6-0 Victory
AKRON,
OH – The Aeros continued their recent success at home Friday night with an
all-around performance in a 6-0 victory against the Reading Phillies. A crowd
of 7,277 fans on Fireworks Friday witnessed Akron win at Canal Park for the 12th
time in 13 games, highlighted by six shutout innings from lefty starter Kelvin
De La Cruz. Coupled with a loss by the Altoona Curve Friday, the third-place
Aeros (56-48) are now only 3.5 games away from the Western Division lead and
the Phillies are 51-53 on the season.
Akron’s
scoring began early as leadoff center fielder Jordan Henry singled to
left-center in the bottom of the first. Henry promptly stole second base,
advanced to third on a fly out and scored on another sacrifice fly by third
baseman Lonnie Chisenhall.
The
lead jumped to 2-0 in the second inning on a towering solo home run from
shortstop Carlos Rivero, just to the right of the left field foul pole. Reading
starter Ty Taubenheim allowed another run in the third as Rivero recorded a sac
fly to left to score Jason Kipnis.
As
De La Cruz kept the Phillies offense in check, the blowout continued in the
bottom of the fifth. Chisenhall singled to left and moved to second on a groundout
before scoring on a botched play by third baseman Cody Overbeck. Akron left
fielder John Drennen then doubled down the right field line and a wild pitch plated
Rivero to make it a 5-0 edge.
Reliever
John Ennis replaced Taubenheim in the sixth but suffered the same fate despite
only having a runner on first base with two outs. The right-hander then hit
both Chisenhall and Jerad Head with pitches to load the bases while new relief
pitcher Tyson Brumment allowed an RBI infield single to first baseman Beau
Mills.
That
hit provided for the final margin of the night as relievers Chen-Chang Lee and
Connor Graham combined for three shutout innings on one hit for the Aeros.
De
La Cruz (4-5) earned his third consecutive win, delivering six spotless innings
with seven strikeouts against only three hits and three walks. The left-hander,
who turns 22 years old Sunday, improved to 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in five starts
in July and his recent winning streak follows a 10-game stretch with no
victories. Taubenheim (3-2) took the loss in permitting the first five runs
(three earned) in five innings on six hits and three walks.
Eight
of the nine Akron batters recorded a single hit but Rivero led the way with a
pair of runs scored and two RBI. His home run was his fourth of the season, second
against Reading, and the pitching staff’s shutout was their fourth in the month
of July.
Tomorrow
is a Super Saver Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park as this four-game series
