Left-handed
pitcher Matt Packer is the winner of this week’s Akron Aeros Player of the Week
award, the team announced today. Packer (1-2, 3.60 ERA) earned his first win
with the Aeros in Saturday’s 9-0 triumph over the Erie SeaWolves. The
Germantown, Tenn. native celebrated his 23rd birthday in a big way
as he gave up no runs on six hits and struck out eight batters over six innings
of work.

Packer
was promoted from Class A Lake County on August 3 where he finished 8-5 with
one save and a league-leading 1.60 ERA in 95.2 innings pitched. In five games
and four starts with the Aeros, he has allowed 13 runs (12 earned) on 30 hits
with 23 strikeouts against seven walks in 30 innings pitched.

The Akron
Aeros will award their Player of the Week honor to an individual player every
Monday for the rest of the season. In the case of a Monday closure of the team
offices, the Aeros will announce the award Tuesday. Akron outfielder Jerad Head
won the award last week. This week, the separate Eastern League Player-Pitcher
of the Week Awards went to Portland’s Ryan Lavarnway and Reading’s Michael
Cisco, respectively.
