Aerodynamics Game #96: 07/20/10

GAME #96 ? TUESDAY, JULY 20, 2010 ? 7:05 P.M.

AKRON AEROS (50-45) vs. ALTOONA CURVE (57-37)

? High Five… The Aeros stayed hot Monday on “Ship out LeBron James” night at Canal Park, winning their fifth straight game with a 5-1 victory over the first-place Altoona Curve. Three solo home runs provided the difference and Akron’s Matt McBride provided the first run of the contest with an RBI single in the first inning. McBride then began the home run mania with a solo shot to start the fourth inning and the Curve scored their lone on an Alex White wild pitch in the fifth. Rehabbing Cleveland Indians star Asdrubal Cabrera then delivered his first home run with Akron in the fifth and Jerad Head hit the third straight leadoff homer to cap the victory in the bottom of the sixth inning. White (5-4) was dominant again in earning the win, Altoona lefty Rudy Owens (8-4) went five innings in the loss and new closer Omar Aguilar recorded his fifth save of the season.

? Tar Heel Thunder… Ever since arriving from Class A Kinston on June 1st, White has been Akron’s most consistent starter and proved it again Monday. He limited the Curve offense to one run on six hits and no walks, striking out seven in seven innings for his fifth consecutive quality start. Cleveland’s first-round selection (15th overall) in the June 2009 Draft out of the University of North Carolina, the 21-year-old right-hander has actually been among the best full-season minor league pitchers in baseball this year. His combined 2.09 ERA now ranks ninth in MiLB as does his .196 batting average against in 110.0 innings pitched.
? Louisville Slugger… Another red-hot Akron Aero is right fielder Matt McBride, who finished a triple away from the cycle in Monday night’s victory over the Altoona Curve. The first baseman/corner outfielder has been on a power surge recently, ranking second in all of minor league baseball with 11 home runs since June 28th. Over this sudden 19-game stretch, the 25-year-old is batting .370 (27-for-73) with an additional nine walks, six doubles, 17 runs scored, 24 RBI and a .918 slugging percentage. In 87 games played this year in Double-A, McBride also leads the team in hits (93), doubles (21), home runs (15) and RBI (56).
? It’s Tribe Time… Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera completed his rehab assignment with the Aeros today and was activated by the Cleveland Indians. In four games in Double-A, the 24-year-old Venezuela native batted .357 (5-for-14) with his solo home run last night and three walks while recovering from a fractured left forearm. Also remaining on the Aeros roster is right fielder Shin-Soo Choo, who is recovering from a right thumb sprain and is expected to remain in Akron for the rest of this series.
? Second Base Star… Jason Kipnis had yet another productive evening at the plate Monday in finishing 3-for-3 at the plate after being awarded earlier in the day as the Akron Aeros Player of the Week. The converted second baseman out of Arizona State University is now batting .650 (13-for-20) in five games since the EL All-Star Break with four doubles and six runs scored.
The Akron Aeros now are an Eastern League-leading 30-15 since May 31st, catching up 5.5 games over first-place Altoona (24-20) and jumping 13 games over then-second Richmond (17-28)
