GAME #80 ? FRIDAY, JULY 2, 2010 ? 7:05 P.M.
ROAD GAME #40 ? PRINCE GEORGE’S STADIUM ? BOWIE, MD
AKRON AEROS (39-40) VS. BOWIE BAYSOX (43-37)
CLEVELAND INDIANS BALTIMORE ORIOLES
? Baysox Beatdown… First baseman Matt McBride tied an Aeros franchise record with three home runs as Akron defeated the host Bowie Baysox 5-0 on Thursday night at Prince George’s Stadium. McBride hit all three of his shots against Bowie starting pitcher Ryohei Tanaka, beginning with a two-run blast in the first inning. He then hit solo shots in the fourth and sixth innings while the other Aeros run scored on an RBI single by Cristo Arnal in the fifth. Lefty starter Scott Barnes (4-7) earned the win with seven shutout innings, Tanaka (4-8) took the loss and reliever Connor Graham kept Bowie scoreless in the final two frames.
? Super Scotty… It was one of the finest starts of the season for Barnes in limiting the Baysox Thursday through seven dominant innings. The inconsistent starter out of St. John’s University entered the contest with a 6.16 ERA, but now has four shutout outings of at least five frames on the year. He struck out four, walked only one and allowed five hits Thursday for his second quality start in 2010 as he still leads Eastern League starting pitchers with 9.21 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. The Indians acquired him in a trade with the San Francisco Giants in July 2009 and he was an eighth-round selection in the June 2009 Draft.
? Bat Trick… McBride had an incredible night to remember Thursday
in Bowie in becoming just the sixth Akron Aeros player to ever collect three home runs in a regular season game. The last Akron player to have a hat trick of homers was Stephen Head on August 8th, 2008, as McBride set new team highs this season with the three homers, three extra-base hits, 12 total bases and tied the top mark with three runs scored. The 25-year-old native of Bethlehem, PA now has five homers and seven hits total in just four games on this road trip and is a clear early favorite for Akron Aeros Player of the Week honors. He also continues to shine away from Canal Park this season, as he has amazingly reached base in all 34 road games in 2010 with a .301 batting average along with all nine of his home runs, 24 runs scored, 26 RBI and a .541 slugging percentage.
? Diego Drennen… Another hot Akron batter is outfielder John Drennen, as he singled in the sixth Thursday night to extend his current hitting streak to 10 straight games. He is now batting .328 in his last 52 games with 21 runs scored and 27 RBI dating back to April 25th and he currently leads all active Aeros hitters with a .303 batting average this season. The Indians originally selected Drennen in the sandwich round (33rd overall) of the June 2005 Draft out of Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego.
? Berger’s Back… The Aeros made a roster move today as IF Carlos Rivero was placed on the disabled list with a left wrist sprain and LHP Eric Berger was activated from the D.L. Rivero was placed retroactive to June 30th and the 24-year-old Berger will be starting tonight at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie after missing the past week and a half with mid-back tightness.
AEROS STAT OF THE NIGHT:
The Akron Aeros held Bowie scoreless Thursday night for the team’s sixth shutout of the 2010 season, and the Aeros are now 27-6 overall when opponents score three runs or less.
